CHARACTER INFO
Name: Barbara (NoLastName)
Age: A little over 200 years old.
Original/Canon: Original
Appearance: Roughly this. A wild mane of black hair that reaches down to her waist, golden irises, large pointed ears, horns and bright red skin. Owing to her oni blood, enhanced further by her divine blood, Barbara stands at ten feet tall with a broad and muscular frame to match. This is generally hidden beneath her usual attire, a maid uniform tailor made to fit her body.
Setting:
- Barbara's world is a fantasy setting on a world known as Ribhinn.
- Originally, the native population were visited by an alien race from beyond the stars.
- They settled on the planet and shared their knowledge with the people of Ribhinn, allowing their society to progress far faster than it would have normally.
- The aliens who visited were worshipped as Gods.
- However, as the native population became more and more advanced, the visitors began to fear they would use their steadily growing power to overthrow them.
- Rounding up hordes of children and isolating them from the rest of the world, the aliens then let loose a curse that transformed all of the remaining adult population into monsters of all sorts, the kind of creatures you would find wandering the planet as generic enemy encounters in a jrpg.
- The children were raised in separate communities under each "god" until enough generations passed that the truth had been all but forgotten about.
- They were then fed fake mythology of their world; the original populace were known as the Milesians who worshipped the Gods of Ribhinn, but those Gods had decided that the survivors were "chosen" to rule the planet and so the newfound human race had colonized the world and taken it for themselves.
- As more and more generations came and went, this lie was spread until it was seen as historical fact.
- Eventually, having decided there was nothing else to gain from remaining on the planet, the alien visitors presented themselves to the kingdoms of Ribhinn and announced they would be departing soon. This threw the world into panic with many cities and kingdoms devising their own approach to handling the panic that ensued from being abandoned.
- The church as an institution collaborated with their neighbouring branches and spread the lie that the Gods had told their priests that this was all a test to determined humanity's independence, that they would return one day but only if mankind remained righteous and true. They announced the word of God that humans were to live by, but primarily it all allowed the church to maintain relevance and secure its grip on their respective kingdoms, ruling the world behind the kings and queens who had no idea they were being manipulated. While not everybody believed them, there was enough of a majority for their plan to work, especially when it came to the ruling class.
- Present day Ribhinn (that is to say, when the story takes place) is a sword and sorcery setting with firearms comparative to 1800s Earth (think muskets, flintlock pistols, cannons). There are scientists who work to advance society's technological understanding, but there are also scholars who study magic.
- The church keeps a firm grip on the majority of the world's population, either through believing the lie that their Gods may one day return, or more underhanded means such as bribery and coercion. As such, a majority of the major kingdoms are religious and blaspheming is a pretty serious social faux pas.
Background:
- Barbara's homeland is the kingdom of Tinedearg. It has been ruled by the Lasair bloodline for many generations, but the more knowledgeable members of the population know that the local branch of the church make most of the decisions.
- When the Gods left Ribhinn, the current ruling Lasair King proclaimed that he would simply call their patron deity, the King of Storms, back to the land. He planned to use the storm king's sword, a ceremonial weapon believed to have been forged by the God himself, using one of his own talons for the blade and passing it on to founder of Tinedearg.
- The king travelled to a holy mountain just outside the Kingdom's territory, the only location on the planet the storm king would descend when he chose to answer the call of his people. Armed with the storm king's sword, the King travelled with an entourage comprised of his court mage, a legion of soldiers and a young woman chosen to be offered up to the storm king in sacrifice. While the storm king was not the kind of person to demand sacrifices, the presentation of a martyr for the people was met with great approval by them before their departure.
- Once they arrived at their destination, the King and his entourage were surprised to see the temple located at the base of the holy mountain desecrated and the monks who guarded it dead. An Oni had wandered down from an adjacent mountain in search of food and raided the area to pillage their own supplies.
- The King's entourage were no match for the great demon, slaughtered easily in the face of its overwhelming strength. Desperate, the court mage suggested the King use the ceremonial sword, but the King (too cowardly to do so) made up the excuse that it could not be tainted with the blood of a monster. The woman brought to be sacrificed however courageously drew the sword instead and charged at the beast while it was feasting, managing to pierce its leg. Although it hadn't done nearly enough to kill it, the sword's use had caused the sky above to darken in an instance, summoning a bolt of lightning directly to the blade and incinerating the Oni in a flash.
- As the dark clouds gave way to a sunny sky again, neither the Oni, the woman or the sword were anywhere to be seen, with nothing but a pile of ash in their places. However, amidst the ashes there was now a newborn infant with red skin and tiny horns who somewhat resembled the woman who'd slain the oni. As she cried, the King panicked and drew his blade seeking to kill the tiny creature, yet it was the court mage who stayed his hand and suggested they hold onto the child as she could prove useful.
- The baby was kept and christened "Barbara" (after a saint invoked for protection during storms) and raised primarily by the court mage and assisted by several servants. Once she reached maturity the King ordered her to be trained as a maid, despite the court mage's insistence she would serve them better as a soldier, because he wanted her raised to be submissive, subservient and in a role that would teach her to always defer to authority due to the fear he possessed for her. The king feared Barbara right up until the day he died and always requested she be kept separate from him in the castle.
- Due to her longevity, Barbara outlived everyone she knew growing up and continued to serve the kingdom. The king's son recognised Barbara's potential and often had her present during diplomatic meetings with other nation's rulers or delegates; while she only ever attended these talks as a maid, her size and unusual appearance was rumoured all across the land as the Lasair's "beast", a secret weapon kept locked away in the castle.
Personality: There are three core components of Barbara's character, much of which comes down to nature vs nurture.
The first and most surface level of her character, that people are most likely to notice, is her dedication towards being a maid. The ruling king responsible for her creation lied that it was by his decision to spare her life that she was not only alive today, but afforded food, shelter and a stable job as a maid in his castle. Not knowing any better, she's lived her whole life grateful for everything she has and constantly works towards representing her King and the royal family to the best of her ability. Barbara is a skilled, efficient and punctual worker who always carries herself politely and professionally around others. She even maintains this demeanour around strangers, as she believes herself to represent the royal family in their absence and would do anything to avoid tarnishing their reputation as one of the servants in their employ. However, unless the person in her company is a royal of some sort, she won't simply do anything that's asked of her by others. Although she's eager to help, she isn't in any hurry to be a doormat to just about anyone and she'll reject requests made of her if she doesn't feel up to it. Despite this, she enjoys lending a hand in a pinch and is very receptive to people who treat her kindly.
During her downtime and outside of working hours, Barbara is a little different from her professional self. Raised by the court mage at the time, who was known as a bit of an eccentric oddball by human standards, he had little concern for the King's fears of the oni child and instead encouraged and indulged her just out of fascination. As a child she was curious, inquistive and playful, so he often snuck her out of the castle at night so she could explore the castle grounds and interact with the wildlife surrounding it. Some of the servants who raised her also grew close to her, as despite her apperance she wasn't much different from a human child in demeanour and was even thought of as quite sweet, if a little quiet. She isn't much different now that she's an adult, as Barbara is a person who loves to explore (in a literal and figurative sense) who has had her ability to actually do so heavily stifled due to being confined to the castle her whole life. She likes collecting things, but her idea of what's actually worth keeping tends to entail items that make her sentimental rather than material wealth. She can also appear absentminded, but the truth is she can simply become hyperfocused on things that catch her eye and she'll wander off without a thought to seek them out.
Lastly...given Barbara's creation was the result of a human, a god and an oni, the oni part of her does influence her nature somewhat. Oni are percieved by humans as aggressive, bloodthirsty monsters - but that's a more xenophobic view of their demeanour cultivated by a general fear and mistrust of anything inhuman in Ribhinn. Rather, Onis are simply a lot more bold and comptetive due to their size and strength. They enjoy testing their strength against similarly sized or larger creatures (especially dragons), they're territorial (that is to say, if an oni considers you part of its pack it will be very protective of you, fellow oni or not) and they have huge appetites due to their immense size, so they can be very gluttonous. All of these traits apply to Barbara as well; although she won't suddenly become loud and brash all of a sudden once she's picked a fight with someone as strong (or stronger) than she is, it'd definitely give her an emotional rush on the inside that would drive her to keep fighting. Sparring with someone who gives her a good fight will also make her very fond of them, so it's the quickest (and riskiest) way to endear yourself to her.
Also, she likes to take a nap after a huge meal. Especially in a warm spot. Like a cat. She's very hard to wake up.
Powers/Nerfing:
Barbara, as far as RPG classes go, is your DPS/Tank. A lot of her "powers" are really just Oni physiology, although they are enhanced by the divine blood of her non-oni god father (not to be confused with her non-oni godfather).
- Barbara has superhuman strength. She can punch through wood, stone, metal, lift extremely heavy objects, etc. She's buff as hell.
- Barbara's greatest asset is her durability. Her body is highly resistant to external sources of damage; you can try to slash her, stab her, bruise her, crush her, shoot her, burn her, freeze her, shock her...basically, any conventional method of injuring her isn't likely to be effective. She isn't completely invulnerable, far from it, it's just that she can take far greater punishment than most people.
- She also has superhuman stamina which means she can work for hours without getting tired and can hold her breath for an extremely long time. Barbara also has an outstanding tolerance for pain; she could keep fighting with a lost limb or a hole in her stomach (just as an example) and it wouldn't impede her that much. Also, her alcoholc tolerance is super high but this is only as far as normal alcohol goes. Onis brew their own alcohol that is capable of getting her drunk like a normal person.
- Her healing factor is far greater than that of a human; if she broke a limb, it would mend in about an hour. However, this rapid recovery of hers only applies when she's at rest; if she's moving around and active then it would take much longer (basically, she can't make use of this ability during a fight). She can also regrow lost limbs, but this can take up to several days; if she eats a lot of food and sleeps a lot on top of that, it can speed up the process, but it would still take a lot of time. She can also regenerate her organs, but it's important to note that if her heart, brain or lungs were injured or even destroyed, it would kill her before they could mend and she'd need to be treated medically like a human.
- Her nails are extremely sharp and can be used to slice through things like claws. Her teeth are similarly sharp and can bite through incredibly tough material, such as dragon scales (from her home world). Lastly, her horns could be weaponized but it's a bit less convenient to use than her claws and teeth given they're on top of her head.
With all this being said, Barbara isn't invincible. She has her share of weaknesses, which include:
- Because of her immense size and strength, Barbara is really careful around other people. She has a lot of control over her strength, but she's also extremely aware of how fragile humans are compared to her. Combine this with the fact that she would rarely if ever kill someone, if someone trying to kill her were to carefully plan an attack on her that could kill her decisively and quickly, she'd be easily taken by surprise given her careful nature.
- Barbara has a huge stride due to the fact she's so huge, but she isn't superhumanly fast otherwise. It would actually be easy for a normal sized human who was particularly agile to avoid her; think about how a human would struggle to grab a really fast, small animal. The same principle applies for her as she isn't a particularly agile person.
- Given her immense size, it should be no surprise that Barbara eats a lot. It isn't impossible to eat enough to sustain herself on a day to day basis, but she would never turn down another meal if offered because she'd never get full. This is classified as a weakness because given her size, her body needs a lot of energy and if she isn't fed it can impact every aspect of her powers; she'd be a lot weaker, her stamina would take a huge hit, she'd be extremely lethargic and her regenerative factor would basically freeze completely. Being fed properly could be the difference between life and death for her!
- Barbara doesn't have any inherent resistance to magic. For example, if someone conjured a fireball and threw it at her, her body wouldn't be too affected by it because it relies on damaging her body the same way a normal explosion would. However, if someone used a magic spell to conjure burns all over her body, she'd have no way of resisting it and it would bypass her natural durability. She's also susceptible to being poisoned by magic despite her body being resistant to eating poisonous substances/spoiled food. She has a great resistance to biological ailments, but being weakened/debilitated/poisoned via magic is distinct from that and not something she has any resistance to whatsoever. As another example, if someone used magic to directly target her organs, say by crushing her heart or piercing a lung, she would also have no way of preventing it (provided she can't kill the person trying to do it first.), or someone could just cast a spell to shrink her down and trap her in a little cage and bam. No problem. These are just a few examples, but there are a lot of reasonable ways to harm her or remove her as a threat; she's only really resistant to conventional forms of damage.
- Lastly, because of her human side, she is vulnerable to human illnesses! It's a case by case basis, but she could catch a cold for example.
House:
Inventory:
- One tailor made maid uniform, designed to fit her huge frame.
- A Kanabo, a spiked club that belonged to her oni "dad". It's a huge spiked metal bat, but because it's an appropriate size for an oni to wield it's extremely heavy.
